Motorola explores to split into 3 companies

As we know, Motorola has said that company wanted to split in 2 different companies, is now splitting in 3 companies, in order to raise cash and pay down debt, as per reports the New York Times.

The company has hired JPMorgan Chase, Centerview Partners and Goldman Sachs to seek buyers for its division that manufactures set-top boxes for cable television companies and radios to go into cellphone transmission towers. “The businesses up for sale could be worth as much as $5 billion,” said Philip Cusick, Analyst for Macquarie Capital.
Last year, Motorola had said that it wanted to separate its struggling cellphone handset unit from the rest of the company, which includes a third business unit that sells two-way radios to businesses and government agencies. “Even if it sells the set-top box and communications equipment unit, the company would still likely separate the two remaining divisions,” said Cusick.

The company is not expected to begin the separation process, however, until the finances of the handset unit stabilize, perhaps in mid-2010. Some of the analysts said that a final split-up is not expected until 2011 at the earliest.

After a long slide, Motorola has high hopes for turning around its cellphone business. It recently introduced two smart phones, including the Droid, which is being promoted by Verizon Wireless. Motorola promises dozens more smart phones in the next year.

Motorola got into the cable box business in 2000, when it acquired General Instruments for $17 billion. Prospects for that business may be dimming, however, in part from more aggressive competition from its main rival Cisco Systems. Moreover, the rise of video delivered over the internet may undercut the traditional cable TV model.

Motorola’s telecom equipment business has also had its share of troubles. It primarily supplies radios to wireless carriers that use an older technology. The company’s bankers are also approaching private equity firms, including TPG and Silver Lake Partners.

Motorola: Brits buy boring.

Droid Does Stealth

So Motorola’s just started advertising the Droid in the UK. Except rather than ‘Droid’, as Motorola calls the phone in the US, our version is called ‘Milestone’. And instead of adverts showing stealth fighter planes bombing us with advanced technology, we get some voice-over lady telling us about ‘versatility’. Am I the only one who thinks we got the short straw?

(apologies if youtube pulls either of these.)

check out the US advert here.

check out the UK advert here.

Full disclosure as I start: I am an H G Wells fan, and any film that references The War of the Worlds would probably get my vote automatically. I’m not adverse to stealth jets either.  Honestly, the eight year-old in me thinks they’re actually rather awesome. So when I say that I think the US advert has its charms, I do have some less-than-formal reasons for doing so. However, our bland UK alternative leaves me feeling as if there’s more reasons for me to prefer the US’s version than simply its engagement with Michael Bay-esque boyish fantasy. These two adverts show a modern, useful consumer item being pitched in drastically different ways, and when that happens, it’s because somebody out there thinks that two groups of people buy for very different reasons.

I’m not going to get into the value of the US commercial. As much as I generally love US marketing strategies, quite a few of them would take a bit of time to logically justify (that recent Michael Bay ‘Victoria’s Secret’ ad springs to mind…). More interesting to me is the UK advert, and it’s attempt to basically pummel the viewer with a list of ‘features’. Roughly speaking, that list is:

  1. the phone’s ‘advanced’, allowing a ‘richer, deeper experience’
  2. connectivity: ‘connect in an instant’
  3. adapatable – it ‘gets smarter’
  4. it ‘knows where you are’
  5. it ‘understands what you want’
  6. runs android 2.0 (well, 2.1 pretty soon, but they don’t mention that)
  7. it has both real keyboard + virtual one on its touchscreen
  8. camera: ‘experience life clearer, wider, richer, the way it was meant to be seen’
  9. and in conclusion: it is ‘without compromise’

Now call me crazy, but i don’t really see any USP’s in that list, other than perhaps Android 2.0, and that point of difference is going to mean nothing by the time the phone goes mainstream in the UK. It’s not really the product’s fault; after all, the boys at Engadget called DROID ‘the best Android phone to date’ [read the full review here], and with a little work, it wouldn’t be too hard to pull this advert into meaningful differentiation info (i’d focus on Android and Google integration myself, maybe the screen res, maybe the 5mp camera over iPhone 3gS’s 3.1mp). But that’s not what the list achieves; rather than being informative, it’s over-long, verbose, full of ultimately meaningless assurances. The effect it has is pretty much the opposite of what it should have done: it makes you wonder if the ‘Milestone’ does, in fact, have anything going for it.

To make this point clearer, consider the ad in the context of some other recent phone marketing. Apple’s recent iPhone brand work in the UK has put a lot of focus on the App Store, such as this example from World of Apple. Now that, at least, is successfully identifying a point of difference, since no other service comes close to the volume of apps Apple’s got up on their store. HTC, in their own way, follow the same USP tactic; the whole ‘quietly brilliant’ campaign seems to reflect HTC’s focus on Android pretty well, identifying the OS’s somewhat-of-a-newcomer status and picking up on the general public tech sense that anything by Google must be pretty decent. Even when they move onto the whole interactivity aspect – ‘you don’t need to get a phone, you need a phone that gets you’ – they keep it satisfyingly focused, such as this example for the Hero [image from slashgear].What could Motorola have picked up from all these enemy broadcasts? If i wanted to point out the path to Motorola, i’d probably remind them that ‘Droid’ being the first proper Android 2.0 device was probably part of why they decided to brand it as ‘Milestone’ over here in Europe in the first place. So what happened to that? If they’d stuck to their guns and kept it simple, they’d have a pretty clear USP, at least for initial exposure.

Pulling back to what I was thinking about when I started writing this post, I have to wonder why Motorola decided to so drastically alter the presentation. I guess it’s probably different US and EMEA offices commissioning different campaigns, but i still feel that the stealth fighter jets would have been a better option. (Honestly: when are they not?) As gloriously ambiguous as the US ad is, at least it sticks to roughly one main point: Droid is the most advanced, future-proof phone on the market. If we try and presume that the last line of the Euro ad is the heavy hitter, then we have to try and work with its primary point being that it is a phone ‘without compromise’. That’s a hard pill to swallow. Without getting into it too much, how is a phone that offers both touch screen and actual keyboards not in some way a compromise? And when you consider that Android 2.1 is probably getting pushed out to the phone sometime in Q1 2010, it seems that the release OS was equally the result of pragmatism. Especially when we remember that – at the moment – there’s no Google Maps Navigation in Europe.

So what do i propose? As it is, we get a boring ad as well as an undersold product. No one wins there. So why not have more HG Wells, and more stealth fighter jets? At least then we’d get an enjoyable viewing experience. And whilst you’re there, bring back that Orange ad where Steven Seagal pitches a romcom to Orange by destroying a golf cart.

R

[edit: comment aside, the minimal initial indications are that Milestone is pre-ordering like hot cakes. We'll have to wait and see what happens with general release. Maybe Motorola's European taste sensors got the boring ad right?]

 Review:

Motorola Milestone

The latest mobile phone from Motorola called the Droid in U.S. and Milestone in Europe is making waves among gadget enthusiasts having already sold 800,00 sets in US since its introduction in November. It is the first to use Android 2.0 operating system, Google’s competitor to Windows Mobile, Symbian and the like for mobile devices.

It resembles both a netbook and a mobile phone in its functionalities. You can browse the web, send/receive emails, instant message all at once due to its multitasking capabilities. You can run many apps in the background like composing an email, listening to music, receive IM alerts etc. in a single window. With its huge 32 GB storage, you can store lots of audio and video files. Its nearest competitor is the iPhone though the latter does not have multitasking capability as yet.

Its 3.7 in wide touch screen has 480 x 854 pixels resolution and gives you bright images. The sliding QWERTY keyboard makes the device compact and the battery lasts up to 7 hours with a single charge. The 5 MP camera dishes out smooth pictures and videos and there is facility for DVD video recording and SD card support.

As with other Android devices, one can download games and other software from the Android Marketplace similar to Apple’s iPhone though the selection is not as great yet but growing. One of the key applications available with Motorola Milestone is Motonav, the mapping software offered free for 60 days trial. It turns the mobile phone into a satellite navigating device through which users can receive traffic alerts, route maps, detailed directions etc.

To sum up Motorola Milestone is a definite head turner and a welcome innovation to the mobile phone marketplace. Its Android 2.0 OS is sure to go places and already there are indications of PC manufacturers like Lenova adopting it in their soon to be released mobile gadgets.

Marketing can be a doggy eat dog world!

As the Marketing Industry seems to have taken a lull it is imperative that  businesses start to invest in Marketing Strategies that are more innovative then the business next to them, because after all there is always another company ready to take their place!

In the June 2009 Harvard Business Review entitled Innovation in Turbulent Times writers Darrell Rigby, Kara Gruver and James Allen state that, “When resources are constrained, the key to growth is pairing an analytic left-brain thinker with an imaginative right-brain partner”. I believe that this is correct when it comes to businesses succeeding in rough economic times. What would a company be if they didn’t try to adjust to the changing times? Take for example cellular phones, if once the iPhone came out and companies like Motorola and Blackberry didn’t try to reconfigure or update their phones where would they be? They would be non-existent, but thanks to the recognition of times changing Motorola and  Blackberry are still around and in the case of Balckberry doing very well. In other cases companies grow uncomfortable with change and do not believe that their innovations are worth while and sometimes even with innovations in products they fail.

“But when times are hard, companies grow disillusioned with their innovation efforts for a reason: Those efforts weren’t very effective to begin with. Innovation isn’t integral to the workings of many organizations. The creativity that leads to game-changing ideas is missing or stifled. Why would any company gamble on a process that seems risky and unpredictable even in good times?”

The answer is be ahead of the game, look at what you are giving your consumer rt now and map out what it should or will look like in two years. By reinventing your product or tweaking it you help your consumer realize that they need your product. A great example is my Nikon Point and Shoot. I bought it less than 6 months ago because I needed something with higher resolution and picture quality and now Nikon has come out a new Point and Shoot that frames faces, you can touch the screen and you can take self images and ensure that your image is framed correctly. I now feel that I need this camera, why? Nikon keeps reinventing their product.

So lesson here is keeping up-to-date and keep your product up with changing times with at least two year lee time!

Motorola Milestone o Droid

The Droid Cometh

For over 10 years I was a Alltel customer in North Carolina. Their mobile service was wonderful, but there choice of phones was somewhat lacking, particularly in the smart phone department. When Verizon purchased Altell I was one of the first customer to move over to Big Red. By then Google had announced their intentions to release a mobile phone operating system known as Android. As I was already a fan boy  of Google, I was over the moon about the idea of soon owning a Google Phone! Imagine my dismay when the first Android device landed at T-Mobile instead of Verizon. Much grumbling was issued under my breath I can assure you.

Last month Verizon released their first Android device known as the Droid. (cue the heavens opening and the angels singing!) I have been the proud owner of my Droid for a little over 2 weeks now. My impressions thus far is that it is a solid built phone. Coming from Motorola I would expect nothing less.

So lets talk about the negatives of the phone.

The physical keyboard is somewhat lacking. My previous phone was a Blackberry 8330, so getting used to the physical spacing of the keys as well as the layout of the keys themselves has been a learning curve. It is also true that the keys give little feedback to you when pressing them.

The droid comes with a micro USB connection for charging and/or connection the phone to your computer. Not a major drawback, but you I just get tired of having to toss my car charger every time I switch phones.

I have noticed a lag in the screen rotating when moving the phone’s screen from portrait to landscape mode. It does not always occur, but another minor annoyance. I have also noticed an issue with the screen reacting to my touch inside of the screen text input boxes. This problem seems more prone to occur when using the screen in landscape mode.

Now for the pluses, and man are there pluses!

The 854 x 480 screen is absolutely one of the highest resolution screens on any phone on the market today. I own a Ipod Touch, and I must say that between the two Droid wins hands down! Watching videos on this screen is a joy.

The onscreen keyboard is great. Currently, it does not support multi touch, but if you believe the rumors an update to the firmware in the next month or two will take care of that. Other than that, I believe this keyboard is as good as Apple’s iPod Touch or iPhone keyboard.

The built 5mp camera takes descent photos. Motorola fixed the issue of blurry photos with a recent firmware update. The dual LED flash can be sometimes overbearing, but does a pretty decent job in most situations.

As for the video the Droid can record… outstanding! Don’t get me wrong its not what you would want to use to record your wedding with, but for those quick moment videos, junior hits his first home run at a little league game, you would be hard to find any other phone that captures video as great as this one does.

If you use any of Google’s apps, such as Gmail, Calendar, or Google Apps this is the phone for you. Droid syncs seamlessly with your Gmail and Calendar accounts. Simply type in your Google Accounts info, and within minutes it has synced your mail and calendar.

The default contacts app on the Droid phone can not only sync and display your Google contacts, but also can do so with your Facebook account as well. If the contact is Facebook based, the contact app will also display the contact’s current news feed within the contact’s details.

I have browsed the Android Market, and I am impressed with the apps that are available considering the Android operating system has only been in public use for a little over a year. Some of my favorite apps either from Apple or Blackberry have not made the crossover to Android yet, but I have found some substitute apps to use until they do. One app I have found particularly amazing is Google’s sky mapping app. For anyone remotely interested in knowing what the bright little dots are in the sky over your head at night this app is sure to please. Turn on the app, point your phone toward any point in the sky, and Google Sky will show you what each star is. Move you phone left, right, up or down, and Google Maps will rotate the sky shown on Droid’s screen with you! Want to know what stars you might see in the next hour or so? No problem. Google Sky will show you. Just move you phone down so that it is pointed below the horizon of the sky. It will display the stars below the horizon as well! Hard to believe I can do things like this with a phone, and software that is free!

My conclusion? I love this phone! Sure it is the first in a long line of phones that will increasingly become better as the Android operating system evolves, its physical keyboard leaves something to be desired, and the current selection of apps is minimal compared to what you can get on the iPhone.  I believe in within the next year many of these issues will be resolved and the Droid line of phones will become the ‘must have’ smart phone.

Smartphone Success Centers on Software, Not Hardware

Telecom gear vendor ZTE will step up its game in the crowded smartphone space next year with an Android-based handset, and Google (s goog) is rumored to be working on its own device. But as the smartphone market continues to heat up, manufacturers are learning the hard way that the key to success in mobile phones lies in the software — not the hardware.

Handset manufacturers are increasingly being elbowed out of the way as carriers embrace developers of operating systems and the apps that run on top of them. Motorola (s mot), for instance, is an afterthought in Verizon’s (s vz) big-budget campaign in support of its Droid initiative, and HTC’s brand is nowhere to be found in T-Mobile’s recent commercial pushing the MyTouch 3G. Meanwhile, Nokia (s nok) continues to fare poorly in the U.S. due largely to its unwillingness to capitulate to American carriers, and smaller manufacturers like Sony Ericsson are becoming irrelevant as they lose market share.

Two phone makers are bucking the trend, though, and they’re doing it by churning out handsets based on their own operating systems. Apple’s (s aapl) iPhone has become an iconic device thanks largely to its intuitive user interface and knockout browser, while Research In Motion (s rimm) continues to gain traction — and mind share — with its BlackBerry, an enterprise-focused handset with software that stresses functionality over fun. Both Apple and RIM are backing their hardware with ad campaigns that put the manufacturer — not the carrier — in front of consumers.

HTC is fighting back with its impressive “You” television commercials, which tout the phone’s Sense user interface and promotes the device’s personalization features. That’s a strategy that will pay dividends as manufacturers become marginalized in mobile, and as software increasingly becomes a key differentiator in the minds of consumers.

Android rettet Motorola (vielleicht)

DROID Does. / DROID

Gadget Watch

The Android platform from Google is wasting no time becoming a force in the cell phone market. The HTC Droid ERIS and Motorola Droid are the first Android platform phones from Verizon. Verizon know for being a little slow with new phones hopes this will give them a boost in the PDA/Smart Phone market. Both phones feature a 5MP camera, Wi-fi, and touch screens along with access to the Android market. There are a few differences. The Droid ERIS features a 3.2 inch screen, virtual qwerty keyboard, and runs on Android 1.5 while the Motorola Droid has a 3.7 inch screen, a slide out qwerty keyboard, and runs on Android 2.0. So if you have Verizon and are looking to upgrade you finally have some good choices.

"THE INVENTOR OF CELLPHONES HAS A GRIPE!"

Martin Cooper, former lead engineer at Motorola said to have invented the handheld cellphone — really, his name is on the “Radio telephone system” patent and he’s credited with making the very first private handheld cellphone call from a busy New York City street on April 3rd, 1973. Well Marty doesn’t like those newfangled handsets. In fact, according to our sterling Mr. Cooper, “Our future I think is a number of specialist devices that focus on one thing that will improve our lives.” Words uttered this week during a conference in Madrid.

What You Need to Know About the Droid

Verizon Wireless (s VZ) launches the Motorola (s mot) Droid this Friday (as if you hadn’t heard), and the carrier is opening “many” of its 2,000 retail outlets early (7 a.m. or 8 a.m. local time) to accommodate what it hopes is a rush of new customers. Call your local store for hours if you’re interested in being among the first to get your hands on the gadget. Meanwhile, here are a few other things you should keep in mind if you’re considering going Droid:

  • The phone will sell for $199 with a two-year agreement and a $100 mail-in rebate. Users who don’t want to wait until Friday or deal with the hassle of mailing in for a rebate can pre-order the device at Best Buy, where the rebate will be applied instantly.
  • As our friends at BillShrink have illustrated, expect to pay $110 a month for a mid-range plan with 450 minutes of talk time for the Droid, or $150 for an unlimited plan. Both rates match AT&T’s (s t) offerings for iPhone service.
  • The Droid comes with a 16GB SD card to help offset its meager 256 MB of on-board memory. For more memory you’ll need to pick up a 32GB SD card.
  • Android Market’s inventory of 10,000+ apps pales compared to Apple’s (a aapl) 100,000-title-plus App Store, but it’s a solid start for the year-old storefront.
  • Google (s goog) apps such as Maps, Latitude, Voice Search, Gmail and Calendar are included, and Droid is the first phone to feature the impressive new Google Maps Navigation.
  • The Droid is the first handset to run Android 2.0 (dubbed “Eclair”), which includes new features such as a combined inbox for multiple email accounts, a virtual keyboard with improved layout and word completion, and “Quick Contact,” which enables a user to call, email or send an SMS simply by clicking on a contact or photo.

Whether the Cupertino gang has anything to fear in the Droid is a matter of some debate. But Motorola’s handset clearly has the firepower to move the needle in the fast-moving smartphone world, and I expect the gadget to sell very well this holiday season in the wake of Verizon’s marketing blitz.

El Aura de Motorola reflejada en el Diamond Edition

Motorola Aura Diamond Edition

Motorola Droid first impressions

It’s been less than a week since the Motorola Droid unexpectedly landed on my doorstep after making quite a fuss on the intertubes. So it’s time for a reality check.

Does this über phone live up to all the hype? The short answer: yes, absolutely! Does it challenge the mighty Nokia N900 to the throne of geekdom? The long answer: possibly, maybe…

If the iPhone is the device for the masses, and the N900 the device for the hackers, then the Droid is the device for the nerds.

Curves vs. edges, shiny vs. matte, simple vs. tweakable, closed vs. open, OS X vs. Android, Apple vs. Google, GSM vs. CDMA, AT&T vs. Verizon, virtual vs. physical keyboard, sealed vs. removable battery – the Droid is the anti-iPhone

What’s hot:
- Slim, retro design
- Awesome display (3.7″, 848×480 resolution)
- Fast, responsive UI
- Android 2.0 (Eclair)
- Google Navigation (the killer app)
- Multiple Google accounts (mail, contacts, calendar)
- Built-in Facebook support (contacts)
- Exchange support
- Dedicated two-stage camera button
- DVD-quality video recording

What’s not:
- No multitouch
- Problems with camera auto-focus
- Average keyboard
- No built-in Twitter support (Twidroid not pre-installed)
- No built-in Flickr support
- No Bluetooth or USB DUN
- CDMA only

RIM market share eroding

Research in Motion, makers for the Blackberry is seeing their market share eroding in recent weeks.  The biggest culprit to the erosion is the Apple iPhone.  The iPhone has been gaining strength with the 3GS introduction.  Their market share has risen an astounding 30% in the two plus years the iPhone has been available.

The introduction of the Palm Pre has done nothing to the market share of both Blackberry and iPhone.  Their market share has not gotten above the double digit mark and their markets share is already dwindling.

The new fear on the market for RIM is the coming introduction of the Droid.  Droid is Motorola’s most recent entry into the smart phone era.  Motorola has been hit with lackluster phones for the past several years.  Motorolas partnership with Google to introduce the Droid which runs Android 2.o software may make another big dent into RIM’s smart phone dominance.  The droid is seen as the best competitor of the iPhone of late.

So RIM needs to come up with some answers to the smart phone woes soon.  It is pinning its hopes possibly on the next storm.  The upgarde to the not so popular original storm is said to be a worthy upgrade.  Whether it is going to be able to compete with the iPhone and Droid will be a wait and see.

Seasonal Jet Lag & Holloween

What a day, though as unexciting as it was.  Simply, because all I did was work all day.  We had the “falling back” Of time though, so the sun set a little “earlier”.  But beyond that I’ve felt sooooo weary all day.  A word I don’t use often, then as the sun was setting lower I got loopier and loopier.  So I coined the phrase, “Seasonal Jet Lag”.  It was the only thing I could compare to how I was feeling was extreme jet lag I have experienced.

Yesterday itself was a FANTASTIC day.  Holloween was  fun, probably one of the most enjoyable I have had.  Though, my Holloween experience is quite minimal.  This being my second one where I have gone actual Trick Or Treating.

Having grown up in a completely strict and rigid household, Holloween was frowned upon and so I never went trick or treating as a child, dressed up ect.  Since it was such a “evil”  Holiday.  I don’t understand how anyone could view a holiday where people give away bags of free candy as evil, but to each their own.  So now all these years later, my parents views have shifted completely.  And they have let my brothers and sisters dress up and go out.

I deeply enjoyed spending time with my family, my brothers, Zach, Caleb and sisters, Grace Sarah as well as her friend who showed up about 30 min after we had been out.   Zachery was a tiger,  Caleb was a vampire, Grace was a bumblebee, Sarah and her friend were barbies.  My other brother, Daniel was a Zombie.  He went with other friends.  He created his own costume, it was amazing, he did a great job on it.  Then, Leah who was able to join us for the evening was a vampire, but a very majestic looking vampire, classy would be another word.  I was a vampire as well, 17th century looking style.  I really liked the costume, would have had the fake teeth as well but when I was setting the mixture for them I goofed it up and it wouldn’t stick so I gave up on it.

We hit one neighborhood and cleared it out, then came back into my dad’s neighborhood, my mom took Grace and Zachery home.  Then Leah, Caleb and I did door to door.   It turned out to be a much greater pull in my opinion because two things.  In my dad’s neighborhood, not a lot of people had been through, and they gave much larger candy!

Then we watched a movie called, “A dog’s breakfast”.  Was very bizarre and VERY funny.    It was really nice to spend time with my family, an Leah, it felt very “family-ish”  Probably one of the most family feelings I’ve ever had sharing time and life with Leah involved in something my family was doing.

Off to sleep now, need rest and have a 10 am meeting with Dr.John and everyone for Red Book & Cotton.  Then going to go to the tmobile store and hopefully see this Motorola Cliq so I can get a hands on experience with it.

Communities Team up to Promote Clean Energy Jobs on Weatherization Day

Washington, D.C. – On Friday, October 30, National Weatherization Day, the Sierra Club is joining community partners, service providers, small businesses, union members and local officials in towns across the country to highlight the benefits of investing in the energy efficiency of our homes.

“Residential buildings are responsible for a staggering twenty percent of global warming pollution. Many families lose money on energy bills each month because their homes aren’t energy efficient,” said Sierra Club Clean Energy Solutions Representative Allison Forbes. “Weatherizing homes is one simple solution that will create thousands of good jobs, put money in the pockets of American families, and help fight global warming.”

It is estimated that retrofitting U.S. homes could reduce associated greenhouse gas emissions by up to 160 million metric tons annually by 2020.

“There is an urgent need to retrofit America’s homes and buildings for the 21st century with continued investment in low-income weatherization assistance and innovative new programs that make home energy makeovers affordable for everyone,” Forbes said. “In order to weatherize America’s homes, we need skilled workers.Investing in our homes can create thousands of good, lasting American jobs that can’t be outsourced.”

The Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced a new $390 million “Retrofit Ramp-Up” program that will deploy innovative approaches to energy efficiency building retrofits, as well as a $64 million program for energy efficiency funding in cities, counties, and Indian tribes.

Several years ago, the Department of Energy designated October 30 National Weatherization Day, an opportunity to improve the public’s understanding of the benefits weatherization to low-income people and communities.  This Friday, Sierra Club’s Cool Cities Program and Blue Green Alliance partners will be hosting and participating in Weatherization Day events in cities across the country.

-In Denver, the Sierra Club will celebrate the graduation of local workers from a weatherization training program offered by the Laborers International Union of North America (LIUNA).

-In Charlotte, North Carolina, volunteers will canvass neighborhoods, reaching out to low-income and elderly residents with information on weatherizing homes to save on energy costs.

-In Detroit, Sierra Club will participate in a “utilities summit” for residents to learn about services available for retrofitting homes. The city, where nearly 40 percent of the population is now below the poverty level, has secured funding to upgrade roughly 4,000 homes.

For a complete list of events and tips on how to save on household energy bills, check out the link to the Sierra Club on the right of this page at the very bottom of my “Affiliates” list.

The Droid Has Landed...Unboxed! Plus a Few Facts

So the Droid from Verizon just landed and we have an unboxing video. Despite all the hype, I have this to say to the makers of the iPhone: You’ve got nothing to worry about. Go out, have fun and get into the hands of a few more millions. As for the BlackBerry, its makers better be worried. Watch the unboxing video below the fold.

I’m not sure how you guys will feel about the Droid in a few days, but I can safely say that like so many so-called iPhone killers in the past, this isn’t one. That’s not a judgment as to the robustness or usability of the device — I need more time for that — it’s just that Verizon seriously overhyped it.

The New York Times’ Saul Hansell has the whole story on Motorola, Sanjay Jha and how the Droid came to be. It’s an interesting read, and one which reveals that the design choices (or lack there off) are courtesy of Verizon. As Hansell writes:

They found a way to fit a slide-out keyboard into a phone that was only 1.5 millimeters thicker than the iPhone. And they used a 3.7-inch touchscreen, noticeably bigger than the 3.5-inch screen on the iPhone. To take advantage of the higher resolution of that screen, Motorola, working with Google, developed new software that would support high-definition video and 3-D graphics.

Here are some facts about Droid collected by our team.

  • Doesn’t appear to be full Microsoft Exchange support — includes Calendar, Mail and Contacts, but not Tasks or Notes, on which some corporate users rely.
  • Placing the Droid in the optional car dock immediately opens up the “Car Dock” interface, and turn-by-turn GPS directions are available.
  • Placing the Droid in the optional media dock places the Droid into an alarm clock and media player mode.
  • The interface is a stock Google Android 2.0 design, so no extra home screens like some other recent devices.
  • Unlike some HTC Android devices, Droid offers a standard 3.5 mm headset jack.
  • Like webOS Synergy, Droid unifies contacts from Gmail, Facebook and Exchange.
  • Dedicated hardware keys offer haptic feedback.
  • Verizon includes a 16GB SD card with the Droid, it supports 32GB.
  • Droid’s 5MP camera with flash trumps most other current phones with 720×480 (DVD Quality) recording at 24 fps
  • The camera also supports Image Stabilization, real-time color effects, scene modes and location tagging.
  • Droid does have an accelerometer and landscape keyboard, so it’s not necessary to slide out the QWERTY keyboard for landscape entry.
  • There’s no MotoBLUR, but there is a Facebook widget.
  • Back of the device is soft touch.
  • The 854×480 display offers a higher resolution than the first ASUS Eee PC netbook, which was 800×480.
  • Droid runs the same Snapdragon chip as the iPhone.

Motorola Droid Makes Its Debut November 6th, $200 Price Tag

Verizon had their Droid event today- and we now have a release date and price tag.  Coming to Verizon November 6th for $200.

Info, specs, and reviews of this phone had been highly available (leaked) thanks to Verizon’s and Motorola’s highly trained marketing team.  But we do know for sure when it’s coming out and for how much….I think that’s what’s most important.

Motorola Aura

“Puts!!” e “Aff” ….

* Tecnologia: 2G
* Wifi: Não!
* Bluetooth: Sim – 2.0
* USB: Sim
* Câmera: 2 Megapixels
* GPS: Nem pensar!
* Dimensões: 96,9 x 47,6 x 18,6 mm
* Display: circular – 1,55 polegadas / 480 pixels de diâmetro

PS: No Submarino ele tá “baratim”, apenas R$ 5.999,00 ^^

Is Android Lagging Behind in Sales? Not Likely

Recently the blogosphere has gone a bit crazy, excuse my lack of hyperbole about the Android platform. Was this ‘Android’ supposed to do battle with the iPhone?

Just because no operators or manufacturers have openly commented about their smart phone sales figures doesn’t mean its bad news. Looking at the number of Android powered phones out now or due in the next 2 months shows a lot of promise

  • HTC Hero – some bloggers say it’s the best Android yet
  • G1 – the funny one with the flip out keyboard, still only with T-Mobile
  • Magic – Vodafone took this and the Android platform global
  • Tattoo – coming out again to Vodafone before xmas
  • Motorola DEXT – a lifesaver for Motorola – probably the phone that saves them. Reviewers go crazy about its Moto Blur interface

As well we know that Sony Ericsson have robot phones coming and the other manufacturers have been toying with this platform.

As far as smartphones go though – Nokia admitted recently they have lost some of their steam to Apple and have not being able to come up with a device that is just as iconic. Some sales figures for Q2 2009 still show Blackberry as the most popular Manufacturer.

So for Xmas will you want an Android?

What is the Motorola Droid?

If you’ve been watching any TV over the last few days (or any of the amazing Yanks-Angels series), you’ve probably been seeing the above commercial pretty often. This Motorola/Verizon commercial seems to be poking a lot of fun at what the iPhone lacks: a keyboard, a 5 megapixel camera, flash, multitasking, customization, widgets, and removable battery.

This all done in a very iPhone-like ad, the black text on white background and with chilled, fun music in the background. Though the end of the commercial says little of what their new device, the Droid, does or even looks like, other than that you should look forward to November. Well, if you don’t want to wait that long to learn about this exciting new phone, we have all the info and pix right here, and Verizon users– this one’s definitely for you.

Ok, first off, the name– Droid is short for Android, as in Google’s Android OS. This is the first Android device coming to Verizon, and boy is it awesome. The device is sleek looking with a huge 3.7 inch touchscreen and full slide out QWERTY keyboard (hence the keyboard comment in the ad), and is definitely one of the nicest looking slider phones we’ve ever seen– far better than the first Android slider phone, the T-Mobile G1.

The Motorola Droid– the phone behind the hype

Specs wise, your getting another really loaded device:

  • Verizon 3G– Yes, this bad boy is coming to you lucky ones on Verizon.
  • Dual microphones– For you know, making good sounding calls.
  • 5 megapixel camera– With the ability to take photos in the dark using the really bright dual LED flash, and a whole lot more. You got image stabilization here as well, and the ability to take DVD quality videos!

The 5 Megapixel camera with flash on the back of the Droid

  • GPS
  • WiFi
  • Verizon Visual Voicemail
  • 3.5mm headphone jack– For using your regular headphones.

And then there’s one of the biggest features that is so big we’re can’t possibly put it on the bullet list: Android 2.0!

This is obviously a huge update to the Android platform, and looks to bring a bunch of new features to Android. We’re talking better contact integration with your Facebook and GMail (kinda like Motorola already does with their MOTOBLUR Android skin on the Cliq. Sadly, rumors are saying that Verizon and Motorola aren’t bringing MOTOBLUR to the Droid), a nicer looking interface, and my personal favorite– updated web browser with, coming next year, full Adobe Flash 10 support! While Android’s browser is already very good at displaying sites, using the same Webkit browser found on other phones like the iPhone and Palm Pre, this phone though will let you view websites that require Flash 10, like Hulu or ESPN vids (no known plans for the iPhone OS to be getting Flash anytime soon, though you can expect the Palm, Windows Mobile and BlackBerry phones to have Flash 10 on their mobile browsers next year as well). This though is still amazing.

You also get the usual Android apps: the Android market for downloading more apps, Google search with voice searching, GMail, Google Talk for IM, Google Maps with turn by turn directions and Street View, YouTube, and it even comes with other non-Google built in apps like the Amazon Mp3 store, QuickOffice for viewing Word, PowerPoint and Excel files, and Facebook.

The Droid when closed– pretty thin for a phone with a full slide out keyboard

We still don’t know an exact price or release date, but we obviously can expect it really soon (Motorola and Verizon wouldn’t hint toward November if they weren’t planning on announcing and releasing this right?). You gotta admit though, this looks like a sick phone– we told you Verizon’s got a lot of sick stuff on the way (and this and the Storm 2 aren’t the end of the new phones coming Verizon’s way, rumors are pointing to a lot more). If your looking for a new Verizon phone, you couldn’t have picked a better time to start looking.

We’ll of course keep you up to date on all the latest Droid news (you can sign up here at Verizon’s site for the latest emails as well), and all the latest Verizon phones. Though what do you think– does the Droid look to live up to all the hype it’s getting, or will it not come near the success the iPhone has had?

in your opinion

Boy genius report on the new Verizon Droid

So Boy Genius has a hands on posting about the new Motorola Verizon Google Droid this morning along with a slew of pictures. They promise a full review to follow. To sum it up they say it is fast and overall feels good to hold. Too be honest from the pictures it looks clunky. There were definitely no ex Apple industrial designers involved in the creation of this phone. That being said if it allows you to run apps in the background, has a battery life longer than 2 hours and our friends at Verizon allow users to stream video they might be on to something. Read about it for your yourself.

The Motorola Droid for Verizon Wireless is all but official. And now, thanks to the Droid Does campaign, we're pretty sure it will get official on October 30th.
What's a good verizon smartphone?
My Verizon phone upgrade is on Monday and I have to make a decision, should i wait till October for the Motorola Sholes to come out or should i get the Nokia twist which comes to stores on Monday?

-I like the fact that they both have physical keyboards
-I love the design of the Nokia Twist
-I'm interested in Google Android and i know the Motorola Sholes will support it
-I have had problems with touch screens in the past (LG Dare)

Any suggestions?

Nokia Twist vs. Motorola Sholes?
seriously when the hell will we ever get a android phone on verizon? why does t mobile always take android?

why are android phones always on t mobile?
Is there anyone who knows for sure if there is an HTC Android phone coming to Verizon by the end of 2009? I know it is rumored, but I am hoping someone out there knows.
Thanks in advance.

HTC Android for VerizonWireless?
Due to predictions made, I have a firm belief that Europe will be getting many more Android-powered phones in the coming year than we will see the light of in America, and being an open-source fanatic, I was wondering if I would be able to use one better than the HTC/G1/3G here.

Note: I know Verizon won't, as they only carry phones they approve, but ATT/T-Mobile?

Will an American cell phone carrier carry a European phone?
will there be any phones coming to verizon with the android operating system?

verizon phones coming with android os?
The Tour is a gift, I know the person will love the device itself, but is it worth to get right now?

-The Tour is the last phone for Verizon that won't have wifi and I have actually read the other day that BB with wifi don't make web browsing any faster than the native 3g that CDMA BBs have been using.

- Verizon will be getting a WebOS device by January 2010, and that software is nothing short of awesome. Just the hardware itself is questionable for the Palm Pre.

- There will be Android devices coming to Verizon by the end of the year which will be pretty damn hard to cripple which Verizon likes to do most of their smart phones.

- RIM has stated they will "try" to have a web browser "like" the iPhone has now…in another year. And what gets me about that quote is that they aren't even going to try and make a BETTER browser, like, you know, be competitive, but instead believing the iPhone browser is the status quo. http://crackberry.com/blackberry-have-native-web-browser-good-iphones-safari-next-summer-and-other-blackberry-tid-bits

-The person I want to get the phone for won't switch carriers so only Verizon phones are the only options for me.

- They don't like ANY of Verizon's current offerings in the touch screen area. (Storm 1, not an option)

I know there will always be something better/faster coming no matter what device/car/equipment you're buying. But should I give the Tour to someone as a gift, or just wait till something better comes along?

Should I get the Blackberry Tour ?
I have Verizon and in October the Motorola Sholes is supposed to come out I wanted an android phone but I can't get it if it's got a fee like with smartphones when you have to pay for all that data packages and stuff so does anyone know if there is a fee before I get my hopes up about the Sholes?

Does any one know if there is an extra fee for android phones like smart phones have?
Hi me and my family is switchig phones for verizon next year. There is supposed to be a android or 2! Is it a smartphone? We are looking at the motorola morrison and Calgary. How much if so with a smartphone plan for 2 and unlimited texting for 4?

What is a android phone?
I just got my T-Mobile G1 phone today, and I'm having some trouble with it.
Does anyone know how to get touch screen messaging on the G1? I know it isn't a rumor or anything, because I've seen my friend's G1 myself with the touch screen text messaging feature. All my systems are up to date, and I can't find the android text messaging check box, or whatever it may be.

Also, I switched from Verizon to T-Mobile, and I'm getting text messages, and possible even calls, from certain people only. My old Verizon phone is completely shut off and I'm not able to communicate with anyone on that anymore, so I know that my new phone is doing all the work now, if that made any sense. I'm able to send out messages, but I'm not able to receive every message. This may be the case for calling as well, but I haven't had any problems with that yet.
Does anyone know why I'm not receiving every message? Please get back with me on this ASAP!

Text messaging problems on G1?
When will these happen if ever, and is it worth waiting for them or should I just a current gen Verizon phone?

Supercar Challenge – Ferrari F430 Spider custom livery: Motorola

This is one of those strange liveries where I just ran out of layers because manufacturer’s logos need to be scratch-built and because of the scaling limitation. This means that the grey / white pattern is created using a dozen vinyls instead of, perhaps, six. Still, I got a MOMO logo done and a decent Motorola logo.

The Motorola logo is created using two triangles with a stretched blue semi-circle blanking out the bottom. The text is created using two M, R, and A Solid Text vinyls placed offset horizontally to create the thickness of lettering. The other letters are created using primitives with the center of the O being a smaller circle that is the same colour as the background (Panther).

The MOMO logo was deliciously easy to create. The M is made of four box primitives. The O is made of two box primitives with the center of the O being a smaller box that is the same colour as the background (Panther). There wasn’t enough layers left to place the word ITALY under the MOMO logo so I made do with the System 3 Pattern vinyl.

One strange thing that I had to go back and fix is that the livery editor draws the car with the top up (that’s why I chose the Panther grey). However, it is, of course, a Spider and when you’re racing in the dry there is no top. This meant that my white lines around the rear Top/Hood of the car, which were created using the curved-sided triangle, had now-visible overlaps into the area behind the headrest that is normally hidden by the top.

Woeful lack of discipline in sales training

Sales training: less rah-rah and more rationality

By Matthew Schwartz

Dismal.  Reactive.  Dysfunctional.  Words used to describe this season’s performance of the New York Mets? No doubt.  But Dave Stein, CEO of research and advisory firm ES Research Group, was actually referring to the current state of sales training.

Stein, a professional trumpeter, before starting a career in sales, said sales managers are constantly hitting the wrong note when it comes to properly training their sales executives.

“Sales leaders themselves tend to think with the right brain (intuitive) so they don’t think of sales training in a logical, disciplined and strategic way,” said Stein, whose clients include Chevron Energy Systems, ING, Marriott and Motorola.

Stein pointed to studies conducted by ES Research showing that at least 85% of sales-training initiatives result in no long-term improvement in sales longer than three months following the end of the sales-training program. “That would be unacceptable in every department except sales,” he said.

Part of the problem with sales training these days is that sales remains something of a mystery that is better left unsolved.  “Sales is still looked upon as a black art and that salespeople are born not made,” Stein said. “But it ought to be based on performance, discipline, process and ROI.  Trying to figure out sales training willy-nilly as opposed to devising a plan is the biggest reason for lack of performance in sales.”

While hiring with your gut has its place, Stein recommends that sales departments need to institute a top-down view of sales hiring and, subsequently, sales performance and sales improvement.

Asked about remedies to improve sales training and performance, Stein said:  “Sales training partners are too often selected from those with the hot new book, the most press releases, or name recognition. [Companies need] a strategic and disciplined approach to sales performance improvement, just as other departments would improve their effectiveness and productivity.”

The danger of letting the problems associated with sales training to fester is a declines in both revenue and earnings. “Selling is an increasing commoditization of services,” Stein said. “If you can’t sell value, customers will demand prices be cut and companies will suffer from decreased margins and profit erosion.”

AT&T Motorola C139 Used Pay-As-You-Go

Review AT&T Motorola C139 Used Pay-As-You-Go -

…That for a mere ten dollars more you can get the C168i, which is like half the thickness, and only sufferes 2 hours less in battery, it plays games, stores more contacts, larger screen, and is just overall a better phone, I have nothing against this phone, i tried it out for a week or so untill i noticed the C168i for only 10 dollars more at Best Buy with all the extra bonuses it has over this one.

Only thing this phone has over the C168i is that it sure looks/feels a LOT more durable.

So this phone alon is a 5 star phone, but when compared to other products in a near/same price range its not the best phone, but its still a GREAT cheap phone, found it for 19.99 at best buy.. how can you complain at that price??

Arris makes $21M IPTV bet on Digeo, Moxi Makeover in 2011 or Later

During an investor relation conference call this morning Arris presented a very compelling view of media convergence, with the newly expanded product line right at the center. Moxi adds to the Arris line of customer premise equipment (CPE), spearheaded by IP telephones.   The real synergy between the companies however, is on the cable operator side.

While you may now Moxi best as a stand alone set top box (STB), the interface has been around longer, sold directly to cable operators for STB rented to subscribers.  Arris has an extensive catalog of DOCSIS based solutions for cable.  Another important element for what Arris consistently referred to as the broadcast side, was early September’s acquisition of EGT

Arris expressed being “closer than ever to the customer”, but admitted to needing “a better channel that needs to evolve” to properly service the Moxi retail business.  Some fun facts about what is in store for them

  • 300,000 Moxi enabled STB install base through cable operator subscriptions, since 2004
  • no numbers were disclosed from the direct to consumer business started in January 2009
  • Moxi had seen updates release in Spring and Summer to its retail customers, but any new updates, especially a logical extension such as tru2way, probably won’t be seen until 2011.

To back track a little, around the time Moxi was bursting on the scene in 2004, Arris had converged IP voice and data.  With their two September acquisitions they are now adding video to that convergence picture.  And that is not all they are adding, as you may see below.

You think that’s a nice photo?  Arris firmly stated that they are still looking how to use their strong balance sheet to “propel towards next generation of products because of disruption of how video is being deliver over the networks in an IP format”  Check back in a few months to see what it looks like at that time.

In the meantime, they have end-to-end tools for broadcasters to deliver linear TV onto the web using IP and take on the likes of

  • Motorola
  • Cisco
  • TiVo

Arris sees Moxi as a home gateway, not only for you, but for Arris.  This is a major undertaking for their CPE and will be more challenging than Telephony.  Digeo did most of the customer support for Moxi and that does not appear to be an Arris model today.  But for $21 million, they could have done a lot worse.

L2 PINK MOTOROLA PINK L2 SLVR STYLE CELL PHONE ATT AT&T CINGULAR BLUETOOTH

Review L2 PINK MOTOROLA PINK L2 SLVR STYLE CELL PHONE ATT AT&T CINGULAR BLUETOOTH -

I have had this phone for about 2 weeks now, and I love it. It’s simple, but it has a few extras on it to make it worth it. There is no camera…which I have had a camera on my phone for several years now, so I kind of miss it. But in all actuality, I rarely used it before anyway. The buttons are kind of small, but I had a razr before this so I am used to smaller buttons. You can change your navigation buttons to be what you want them to be. I wish I could check my myspace on this phone, but its not myspace enabled. I also have issues checking my gmail. Most other email services are good though (hotmail, yahoo, etc). All in all, I knew this phone had no camera and I knew the buttons were small before I ordered it. The ONLY major problem I have is, when I got the phone it had a dead pixel on it…but I know Cingular can send me a new phone. Great phone!

1st post!

Well, I finally started the blog I’ve talking about starting for a while. I plan on doing what most people on a blog, talking about life in general. Also, since I’m such a power-dork, I’ll be talking about some of my interests like comics and technology. So, to all joining me on this journey; “enjoy!”

We had our third week of puppy training today. Boo (our three month-old collie-retriever-chow mix) learned loose-leash walking and leave-it/take-it. Both of which he will need practice to master. But hopefully, with time, he’ll start leaving our sandles alone.
Not too long ago Motorola announced the Moto CLIQ, their 1st android device. It’s set to release some time in the next couple months (I’m thinking between late Oct and early Nov for the holiday rush). Most people I’ve spoken about phones with may remember I’m not a fan of Motorola. However, after seeing/reading several hands-on reviews from the conference I’m more excited for a motorola cell phone than now than I’ve ever been before. Motorola also added their own piece of Motorola specific programing called MotoBlur. What MotoBlur does is makes the Moto CLIQ interact with social networks better than any other phone before it! And on top of that it works well (according to those hands-on reviews I mentioned before). To give my readers an idea of how well the Moto CLIQ interacts with social networks, during the demo they had a call come in and it had the caller’s facebook update below the caller id pic. While that in and of itself isn’t ground-breaking, it’s only one way that the Moto CLIQ works with social networks. While this may read a bit like an ad for the phone (and I am, admittedly, very excited for the phone), I do realize that the phone is a Motorola. By that I mean, I’ve only seen 1 motorola phone in recent memory that was anything above a “meh.” It very well could suffer from most or all the same flaws that plauged every phone built anything like the RAZR (that would be about every motorola phone made in the last 5+ years). I guess we’ll see in about a month or so. And, here’s hoping T-Mobile will make me the new android-champion for my store (I could get the phone for free)!

Specifications of Motorola U9

Firstly, unlike many cell phones that boast MP3 player functionality by way of a supplementary function, the Motorola U9 seems to have turned the tables somewhat in being primarily a feature rich MP3 player that comes with integral cell phone functionality and its notable that Motorola is undoubtedly promoting the Motorola U9 from this angle. The second thing that strikes you is just how similar the Motorola U9 looks style-wise to Creative’s Zen Stone MP3 player but perhaps that’s just us. Still, if Creative’s device has in anyway served as an inspiration it’s by no means a bad thing.

Finished in what Motorola refer to as a ‘metallic gloss, jewellery finish’ the Motorola U9 is a clamshell device boasting a borderless organic light emitting diode 1.45″ 65K outer display unit which comes complete with touch sensitive controls that appear as and when required. A further 2.0″ QVGA 262 TFT display unit is also included on the interior of the device for use when the phone is flipped open.

The device, which measures in at 90mm x 48.6mm x 16.4mm and weighs 87.5g, comes with 25MB of internal memory which can be further expanded to up to 4GB thanks to an on-board MicroSD card slot and supports all the usual suspects as far as file formats are concerned MP3, AAC, AAC+ and WMA with music transfer provided courtesy of Windows Media Player 11.

However, whilst the Motorola U9 also comes with integral stereo Bluetooth connectivity allowing for the use of wireless headsets and headphones as well as Motorola’s CrystalTalk technology which is purported to offer better call clarity as far as cell phone functionality is concerned, the Motorola U9 is a fairly rudimentary Quad-Band GPRS affair offering SMS, MMS, WVIM and EMS 5.0 messaging with a listed talk time of 430 minutes and a standby time of up to 350 hours and an integral camera rated at a fairly mundane 2.0 megapixels. GSM Cell Phones and Their Benefits

GSM world cell phones are the talk of the industry. Many businesses and individuals are looking into this latest technology. So for the novice, what is GSM?  Simply put, GSM is a digital cellular technology that is open and can transmit voice and data. Where GSM differs from older technology is that the system divides each channel into eight time-slots which allows the same phone to be used around the world.

Using these cell phones gives you access to the same services on your cell phone whether you are in the United States or Europe or anywhere else there is a signal. You can use the same telephone number and have the same access as you would in your hometown in any of more than 200 hundred countries.

So why is this important? The GSM world cell phones give you the ability to have one phone and travel around the world with it. You do not need to worry about changing SIM cards or other elements of your phone, or have to take the dreaded second cell phone with you.

Travelers like things made as easy as possible. The bane of many travelers’ existence has been the need to have two or more cell phones with them when they travel and then try to guess which cell phone will work in which country. This new technology allows you to take only one cell phone with you and have confidence that it will work, including all the features you need, no matter where you travel to.

Sure there are some remote areas where the GSM world cell phone will not work, however, for the vast majority of travelers these cell phones will be the only cell phone they need. It is easy to see why travelers are rejoicing over this new technology. The only thing they have to worry about is having the right electrical adapter to chair their world phone.

As you search online for the best cell phone, you will undoubtedly be impressed with the GSM world cell phones. For anyone who travels out of the country, the practicality of these phones cannot be overstated. Priced right and with a good selection of models to choose from, it is only a matter of time before world cell phones become more popular than traditional cell phones.

The world is a big place but just got a little smaller thanks to the newest technology that has brought us GSM world cell phones
