It’s time for another podcast (35 min) with Matthew Bennett (Nokia Daily News, US Mobile Industry):

This week we were joined by special guest Tony Peric (FoneFrenzy) and his (WiFi-less) Palm Pixi! We discussed the HTC Hero, the Motorola Droid, and the Nokia N900…
We also talked about unlocking and debranding the Sony Ericsson C905a, and we even covered the Acer Aspire 1410 and the HP Mini 311. Enjoy
For over 10 years I was a Alltel customer in North Carolina. Their mobile service was wonderful, but there choice of phones was somewhat lacking, particularly in the smart phone department. When Verizon purchased Altell I was one of the first customer to move over to Big Red. By then Google had announced their intentions to release a mobile phone operating system known as Android. As I was already a fan boy of Google, I was over the moon about the idea of soon owning a Google Phone! Imagine my dismay when the first Android device landed at T-Mobile instead of Verizon. Much grumbling was issued under my breath I can assure you.
Last month Verizon released their first Android device known as the Droid. (cue the heavens opening and the angels singing!) I have been the proud owner of my Droid for a little over 2 weeks now. My impressions thus far is that it is a solid built phone. Coming from Motorola I would expect nothing less.
So lets talk about the negatives of the phone.
The physical keyboard is somewhat lacking. My previous phone was a Blackberry 8330, so getting used to the physical spacing of the keys as well as the layout of the keys themselves has been a learning curve. It is also true that the keys give little feedback to you when pressing them.
The droid comes with a micro USB connection for charging and/or connection the phone to your computer. Not a major drawback, but you I just get tired of having to toss my car charger every time I switch phones.
I have noticed a lag in the screen rotating when moving the phone’s screen from portrait to landscape mode. It does not always occur, but another minor annoyance. I have also noticed an issue with the screen reacting to my touch inside of the screen text input boxes. This problem seems more prone to occur when using the screen in landscape mode.
Now for the pluses, and man are there pluses!
The 854 x 480 screen is absolutely one of the highest resolution screens on any phone on the market today. I own a Ipod Touch, and I must say that between the two Droid wins hands down! Watching videos on this screen is a joy.
The onscreen keyboard is great. Currently, it does not support multi touch, but if you believe the rumors an update to the firmware in the next month or two will take care of that. Other than that, I believe this keyboard is as good as Apple’s iPod Touch or iPhone keyboard.
The built 5mp camera takes descent photos. Motorola fixed the issue of blurry photos with a recent firmware update. The dual LED flash can be sometimes overbearing, but does a pretty decent job in most situations.
As for the video the Droid can record… outstanding! Don’t get me wrong its not what you would want to use to record your wedding with, but for those quick moment videos, junior hits his first home run at a little league game, you would be hard to find any other phone that captures video as great as this one does.
If you use any of Google’s apps, such as Gmail, Calendar, or Google Apps this is the phone for you. Droid syncs seamlessly with your Gmail and Calendar accounts. Simply type in your Google Accounts info, and within minutes it has synced your mail and calendar.
The default contacts app on the Droid phone can not only sync and display your Google contacts, but also can do so with your Facebook account as well. If the contact is Facebook based, the contact app will also display the contact’s current news feed within the contact’s details.
I have browsed the Android Market, and I am impressed with the apps that are available considering the Android operating system has only been in public use for a little over a year. Some of my favorite apps either from Apple or Blackberry have not made the crossover to Android yet, but I have found some substitute apps to use until they do. One app I have found particularly amazing is Google’s sky mapping app. For anyone remotely interested in knowing what the bright little dots are in the sky over your head at night this app is sure to please. Turn on the app, point your phone toward any point in the sky, and Google Sky will show you what each star is. Move you phone left, right, up or down, and Google Maps will rotate the sky shown on Droid’s screen with you! Want to know what stars you might see in the next hour or so? No problem. Google Sky will show you. Just move you phone down so that it is pointed below the horizon of the sky. It will display the stars below the horizon as well! Hard to believe I can do things like this with a phone, and software that is free!
My conclusion? I love this phone! Sure it is the first in a long line of phones that will increasingly become better as the Android operating system evolves, its physical keyboard leaves something to be desired, and the current selection of apps is minimal compared to what you can get on the iPhone. I believe in within the next year many of these issues will be resolved and the Droid line of phones will become the ‘must have’ smart phone.
Telecom gear vendor ZTE will step up its game in the crowded smartphone space next year with an Android-based handset, and Google (s goog) is rumored to be working on its own device. But as the smartphone market continues to heat up, manufacturers are learning the hard way that the key to success in mobile phones lies in the software — not the hardware.
Handset manufacturers are increasingly being elbowed out of the way as carriers embrace developers of operating systems and the apps that run on top of them. Motorola (s mot), for instance, is an afterthought in Verizon’s (s vz) big-budget campaign in support of its Droid initiative, and HTC’s brand is nowhere to be found in T-Mobile’s recent commercial pushing the MyTouch 3G. Meanwhile, Nokia (s nok) continues to fare poorly in the U.S. due largely to its unwillingness to capitulate to American carriers, and smaller manufacturers like Sony Ericsson are becoming irrelevant as they lose market share.
Two phone makers are bucking the trend, though, and they’re doing it by churning out handsets based on their own operating systems. Apple’s (s aapl) iPhone has become an iconic device thanks largely to its intuitive user interface and knockout browser, while Research In Motion (s rimm) continues to gain traction — and mind share — with its BlackBerry, an enterprise-focused handset with software that stresses functionality over fun. Both Apple and RIM are backing their hardware with ad campaigns that put the manufacturer — not the carrier — in front of consumers.
HTC is fighting back with its impressive “You” television commercials, which tout the phone’s Sense user interface and promotes the device’s personalization features. That’s a strategy that will pay dividends as manufacturers become marginalized in mobile, and as software increasingly becomes a key differentiator in the minds of consumers.
The Android platform from Google is wasting no time becoming a force in the cell phone market. The HTC Droid ERIS and Motorola Droid are the first Android platform phones from Verizon. Verizon know for being a little slow with new phones hopes this will give them a boost in the PDA/Smart Phone market. Both phones feature a 5MP camera, Wi-fi, and touch screens along with access to the Android market. There are a few differences. The Droid ERIS features a 3.2 inch screen, virtual qwerty keyboard, and runs on Android 1.5 while the Motorola Droid has a 3.7 inch screen, a slide out qwerty keyboard, and runs on Android 2.0. So if you have Verizon and are looking to upgrade you finally have some good choices.
HTC DROID ERIS Key Features ………………….. MOTOROLA DROID Key Features
Martin Cooper, former lead engineer at Motorola said to have invented the handheld cellphone — really, his name is on the “Radio telephone system” patent and he’s credited with making the very first private handheld cellphone call from a busy New York City street on April 3rd, 1973. Well Marty doesn’t like those newfangled handsets. In fact, according to our sterling Mr. Cooper, “Our future I think is a number of specialist devices that focus on one thing that will improve our lives.” Words uttered this week during a conference in Madrid.
Verizon Wireless (s VZ) launches the Motorola (s mot) Droid this Friday (as if you hadn’t heard), and the carrier is opening “many” of its 2,000 retail outlets early (7 a.m. or 8 a.m. local time) to accommodate what it hopes is a rush of new customers. Call your local store for hours if you’re interested in being among the first to get your hands on the gadget. Meanwhile, here are a few other things you should keep in mind if you’re considering going Droid:
The phone will sell for $199 with a two-year agreement and a $100 mail-in rebate. Users who don’t want to wait until Friday or deal with the hassle of mailing in for a rebate can pre-order the device at Best Buy, where the rebate will be applied instantly.
As our friends at BillShrink have illustrated, expect to pay $110 a month for a mid-range plan with 450 minutes of talk time for the Droid, or $150 for an unlimited plan. Both rates match AT&T’s (s t) offerings for iPhone service.
The Droid comes with a 16GB SD card to help offset its meager 256 MB of on-board memory. For more memory you’ll need to pick up a 32GB SD card.
Android Market’s inventory of 10,000+ apps pales compared to Apple’s (a aapl) 100,000-title-plus App Store, but it’s a solid start for the year-old storefront.
Google (s goog) apps such as Maps, Latitude, Voice Search, Gmail and Calendar are included, and Droid is the first phone to feature the impressive new Google Maps Navigation.
The Droid is the first handset to run Android 2.0 (dubbed “Eclair”), which includes new features such as a combined inbox for multiple email accounts, a virtual keyboard with improved layout and word completion, and “Quick Contact,” which enables a user to call, email or send an SMS simply by clicking on a contact or photo.
Whether the Cupertino gang has anything to fear in the Droid is a matter of some debate. But Motorola’s handset clearly has the firepower to move the needle in the fast-moving smartphone world, and I expect the gadget to sell very well this holiday season in the wake of Verizon’s marketing blitz.
It’s been less than a week since the Motorola Droid unexpectedly landed on my doorstep after making quite a fuss on the intertubes. So it’s time for a reality check.
Does this über phone live up to all the hype? The short answer: yes, absolutely! Does it challenge the mighty Nokia N900 to the throne of geekdom? The long answer: possibly, maybe…
If the iPhone is the device for the masses, and the N900 the device for the hackers, then the Droid is the device for the nerds.
Curves vs. edges, shiny vs. matte, simple vs. tweakable, closed vs. open, OS X vs. Android, Apple vs. Google, GSM vs. CDMA, AT&T vs. Verizon, virtual vs. physical keyboard, sealed vs. removable battery – the Droid is the anti-iPhone
What’s hot:
- Slim, retro design
- Awesome display (3.7″, 848×480 resolution)
- Fast, responsive UI
- Android 2.0 (Eclair)
- Google Navigation (the killer app)
- Multiple Google accounts (mail, contacts, calendar)
- Built-in Facebook support (contacts)

- CDMA only
Research in Motion, makers for the Blackberry is seeing their market share eroding in recent weeks. The biggest culprit to the erosion is the Apple iPhone. The iPhone has been gaining strength with the 3GS introduction. Their market share has risen an astounding 30% in the two plus years the iPhone has been available.
The introduction of the Palm Pre has done nothing to the market share of both Blackberry and iPhone. Their market share has not gotten above the double digit mark and their markets share is already dwindling.
The new fear on the market for RIM is the coming introduction of the Droid. Droid is Motorola’s most recent entry into the smart phone era. Motorola has been hit with lackluster phones for the past several years. Motorolas partnership with Google to introduce the Droid which runs Android 2.o software may make another big dent into RIM’s smart phone dominance. The droid is seen as the best competitor of the iPhone of late.
So RIM needs to come up with some answers to the smart phone woes soon. It is pinning its hopes possibly on the next storm. The upgarde to the not so popular original storm is said to be a worthy upgrade. Whether it is going to be able to compete with the iPhone and Droid will be a wait and see.
What a day, though as unexciting as it was. Simply, because all I did was work all day. We had the “falling back” Of time though, so the sun set a little “earlier”. But beyond that I’ve felt sooooo weary all day. A word I don’t use often, then as the sun was setting lower I got loopier and loopier. So I coined the phrase, “Seasonal Jet Lag”. It was the only thing I could compare to how I was feeling was extreme jet lag I have experienced.
Yesterday itself was a FANTASTIC day. Holloween was fun, probably one of the most enjoyable I have had. Though, my Holloween experience is quite minimal. This being my second one where I have gone actual Trick Or Treating.
Having grown up in a completely strict and rigid household, Holloween was frowned upon and so I never went trick or treating as a child, dressed up ect. Since it was such a “evil” Holiday. I don’t understand how anyone could view a holiday where people give away bags of free candy as evil, but to each their own. So now all these years later, my parents views have shifted completely. And they have let my brothers and sisters dress up and go out.
I deeply enjoyed spending time with my family, my brothers, Zach, Caleb and sisters, Grace Sarah as well as her friend who showed up about 30 min after we had been out. Zachery was a tiger, Caleb was a vampire, Grace was a bumblebee, Sarah and her friend were barbies. My other brother, Daniel was a Zombie. He went with other friends. He created his own costume, it was amazing, he did a great job on it. Then, Leah who was able to join us for the evening was a vampire, but a very majestic looking vampire, classy would be another word. I was a vampire as well, 17th century looking style. I really liked the costume, would have had the fake teeth as well but when I was setting the mixture for them I goofed it up and it wouldn’t stick so I gave up on it.
We hit one neighborhood and cleared it out, then came back into my dad’s neighborhood, my mom took Grace and Zachery home. Then Leah, Caleb and I did door to door. It turned out to be a much greater pull in my opinion because two things. In my dad’s neighborhood, not a lot of people had been through, and they gave much larger candy!
Then we watched a movie called, “A dog’s breakfast”. Was very bizarre and VERY funny. It was really nice to spend time with my family, an Leah, it felt very “family-ish” Probably one of the most family feelings I’ve ever had sharing time and life with Leah involved in something my family was doing.
Off to sleep now, need rest and have a 10 am meeting with Dr.John and everyone for Red Book & Cotton. Then going to go to the tmobile store and hopefully see this Motorola Cliq so I can get a hands on experience with it.
